Shona Stone Sculptures from Zimbabwe
Shona Sculptures from Zimbabwe derive their
name from the Shona Tribe of that Country who
first popularised this artform.
These stone sculptures are carved from a wide
variety of rocks including, Soapstone, Spring
Stone, Verdite and Malachite.
The Soapstone Carvings are generally of smaller
artworks like the infamous Shona Mother and
Child and small animal sculptures like Giraffe
Lovers.
Spring stone is the most popular medium used
for the larger stone carvings and African Artworks
as it is a very hard stone and is relatively
inexpensive.
This form of African Craft has become highly
sought after by local and international art collectors.
